Specifying Recipient's Fax Number
In its simplest form, a recipient's fax number is a number string you would normally dial. However, if the fax number to be dialed is not a local number (long distance or international), there are a number of alternative ways to specify the fax number:
- Define the necessary LD/IDD prefix as part of the fax number e.g. 001-1-604-688-6718.
Different countries will have different long distance prefix (e.g. 0 for Italy, 1 for North America) and/or international prefix (e.g. 00 for Italy, 011 for North America).
This problem with this approach is that if the fax numbers (with pre-defined LD/IDD prefix) are stored in a public database shared among users of different countries (e.g. a company-wide Contacts database), the ID/IDD prefix will be incorrect and not accepted by the local telephone company.
- No LD/IDD prefix but all fax numbers are prefixed with the proper country code and area code.
If the Server Configuration document is properly defined, either the necessary LD/IDD prefix would be appended automatically or the redundant country code/area code would be trimmed as required.
Special characters (required by some PABXs)
ExtraFax would pass the following characters unmodified to the telephone system:
Playing DTMF tone after connect
For BrookTrout board users only - you could play DTMF tone after the recipient picked up the phone. You could specify the DTMF tone to be played by using a dollar sign ($) as shown below:
For example, with 12345678$4321, DTMF tone '4321' would be played after the recipient at fax number '12345678' picked up the phone.
